A Slice of Country Life – Back to Basics School

A Slice of Country Life – Back to Basics School

Hi, I’m Christine

I’m a wife, momma, author, planner, prepper, organic gardener and minimalist advocate.

Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to be a farmer’s wife. I wanted to be out in the country, learning to grow my own food and find a way to be self-sufficient without having to rely on anyone.

But dreams are often denied, and I ended up in Corporate America for 30 years until the thought of not fulfilling my dreams left me physically ill.

I would live my dream through the local farmer’s markets, the pages of magazines and growing my own garden where-ever there was space — even if it was in recycled soda pop bottles. I learned every skill I could over the years.  I thank my great-grandmother for starting me down the road to prepping my pantry.  She grew up in the depression and nothing was wasted.

I longed for the days of old — where families gathered around the dinner table and prayed; when food was FOOD and not the stuff that passes for it today.

I discovered that food played a HUGE role in my health — physical and mental, as I had many illnesses through the years.  I also had a fear of not being able to make ends meet during the times I was alone, became ill (hey, no extra paycheck or sick leave) or when I was unemployed.

It is a fear I don’t want anyone to have to face.

Honestly, disaster can happen at any time. When I became ill I was fortunate to have a job, but my illness took every single penny. When my job ended, I didn’t have any savings, I lost healthcare, but I also had a ton of debt.

Instead of panicking, I realized I could rely on the skills I had since I was a little girl. I learned about the relationship between food and health. I learned to live within my means and I began to simplify.

I went back to my basics of preserving my own food, filling my pantry with items I had grown, or were able to get a low cost, and stretch mealtimes so my family had wholesome, honest, filling and delicious food without spending a lot. In fact, it takes me less time now to make dinner than it did when I would run to the grocery store.

You can grow your own veg, make your own bread, yogurt, cheese, and household products. I make my own bacon and you can too! (In fact, I’ll even teach you to can it for long-term storage!)

I grow my own vegetables on my small homestead in PA. I source locally for what I cannot grow or I didn’t have enough in the harvest.

You have these skills too, you just don’t know it yet.

And I have a beautiful herb garden, which is my medicine cabinet. I make my own salves, tonics, teas, and oils.

Imagine having a cup of tea from the herbs you grew yourself!

I have found a way to bring in income without returning to Corporate America and the stress that comes with it.

I’m a rebel. I’m grounded in Mother Earth. And I want to share my skills with you.

I will teach YOU these same techniques I use to help people save money and live a life that is grounded in Old Country Traditions, regardless if you live on a quarter of an acre or multiple acres.

Knowing just a few of these simple skills can pull you through a hard economic time. Instead of feeling depressed, malnourished or overwhelmed, you can be secure in knowing you are providing for your family through your homestead pantry and skills.

Simply put — the more self-reliant you are the better you will feel and the better choices you can make for yourself and your family.
